Dear Parents and Guardians,

Ensuring the safety of our students is our top priority at Maranacook Community Schools. We are writing to remind you of an important safety measure regarding school bus transportation.

It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing, even if the bus is in the school parking lot. This law is in place to protect the safety of our children as they enter and exit the bus. Passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing poses a significant risk of accidents and injury to students.

We want to inform you that all of our school buses are equipped with plate reading cameras to capture any violations of this law. The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office will investigate these violations moving forward. The violation of passing a school bus with the red lights activated is a Class E crime that is punishable by a $250 minimum fine for the first offense and a mandatory 30-day suspension of a driver's license for a 2nd offense occurring within 3 years of the first offense.

We urge all parents and guardians to obey traffic laws and be vigilant when driving near school buses. Together, we can create a safer environment for our children to travel to and from school.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact the Maranacook Community School transportation department or the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office.

Sincerely,
The Maranacook Community School District & The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office.
